President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, in an opinion piece to the editorial of the International Herald Tribune, has said that with millions under threat, inaction is unethical. President Gayoom’s opinion piece was published on the 9 September issue of IHT.
In the opinion piece, President Gayoom noted the significance of the Oxfam International’s groundbreaking report on “Climate Wrongs and Human Rights” which demonstrated how climate change was violating the rights and freedoms of millions of people, especially in vulnerable countries like the Maldives. The President also expressed his hope that this report “would help to move the world from this tragic status quo to quick action in order to achieve a better future based upon international and intergenerational solidarity and climate justice.”
Further, President Gayoom also highlighted the unethical trade-off between human lives and economic growth being made by rich industrialised countries.
